New Delhi: If Zomato had its way, it would soon be home-delivering alcohol during the coronavirus-induced nationwide lockdown.
Zomato’s CEO for food delivery Mohit Gupta has submitted a business proposal to this effect to International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI).
As per the proposal, Zomato will target areas relatively less affected by COVID-19, reports Reuters who have seen the letter. “States should reduce the load on the retail counter by encouraging home delivery,” Gupta has stated.
The Indian restaurant aggregator and food delivery start-up, founded in 2008, has already diversified into grocery delivery after the restaurant business took a hit due to the nationwide lockdown and citizens stopped ordering food.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has given the green signal to open liquor shops in non-containment zones. Serpentine queues have been noticed in states where alcohol stores opened earlier this week after being shut for nearly seven weeks.
Zomato is looking to cash in on this huge demand for alcohol by delivering it to homes.
