New Delhi: Travelers on the Yamuna Expressway, also known as the Taj Expressway, will face increased toll charges starting October 1. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) announced a 4% hike in toll rates during its 82nd meeting held on Thursday, marking the first adjustment in rates in two and a half years.
Under the new rates, the toll tax will vary by vehicle type. Two- and three-wheelers will now incur a charge of ₹1.50 per kilometer, up from ₹1.25. Light four-wheelers, including cars and jeeps, will see an increase from ₹2.50 to ₹2.95 per kilometer. Light commercial vehicles will now be charged ₹4.60 per kilometer, up from ₹4.15, while buses and trucks will face tolls of ₹9.35 per kilometer, rising from ₹8.45. For heavy vehicles and multi-axle construction vehicles, the toll rate has jumped to ₹14.25 per kilometer, previously set at ₹12.90. Large vehicles with seven or more axles will now be charged ₹18.35 per kilometer, compared to the former rate of ₹16.60.
According to YEIDA CEO Arunvir Singh, the revenue generated from these increased toll rates will be allocated to compensate farmers for land acquired for the expressway. He highlighted that 64% of the farmers have yet to receive adequate compensation, and the additional funds will assist in settling these dues.
The toll rate hikes are part of an annual adjustment policy and are pending final approval from the government. During the YEIDA meeting, discussions also revolved around the development of Yamuna City, with plans to modernise it into a smart and environmentally friendly area, aiming to generate new employment opportunities alongside the ongoing development initiatives.
The controversy surrounding farmers’ compensation has been a longstanding issue, and the increase in toll rates is expected to play a role in addressing some of these financial challenges.
