Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress is facing fresh organisational trouble in West Bengal after 101 municipal councillors reportedly resigned from their posts following the party’s heavy defeat in the Assembly election. The resignations have triggered a major political debate, with the party now confronting internal dissent, local level rebellion and signs of weakening ground control.
According to the TV9 Bharatvarsh report, the resignations have come from several municipalities across the state. The list includes 15 councillors from North Barrackpore, 18 from Garulia, 14 from Contai, 16 from Halisahar, 30 from Bhatpara and 8 from Diamond Harbour. The report also said that 17 councillors and local leaders have been arrested in connection with allegations of corruption and illegal extortion.
The situation in Diamond Harbour is being seen as particularly significant because the area is considered one of the important political strongholds of the TMC. Party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who is also Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, represents Diamond Harbour in Parliament. The collective resignation of 8 councillors from the municipality has therefore added to the political pressure on the party leadership.
The developments come after a major change in Bengal’s political landscape. Mamata Banerjee, who came to power in 2011 by ending 35 years of Left rule, suffered a major setback in the 2026 Assembly election. The BJP formed the government in the state for the first time, ending the TMC’s 15 year rule.
The report suggests that the TMC’s challenge is no longer limited to electoral defeat. The party is now dealing with growing discontent at the municipal and booth levels, where local organisation plays a crucial role in Bengal politics. Such resignations could affect the party’s ability to rebuild its network ahead of future political battles.
Mamata Banerjee had recently told party leaders that those who wanted to leave could do so. She reportedly said she would rebuild the party again and was not worried about leaders walking away.
