Kolkata: West Bengal Unemployment Crisis Protests against the woes of teaching job aspirants take an ugly turn in Bengal — the state is witnessing several protests across its borders. While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured that she would extend her help to those affected, Education Minister Bratya Basu has summoned an emergency meeting to discuss their demands.

On Friday at 3 p.m., eight unemployed teachers and staff will travel to Kolkata to attend a meeting at the Vikas Bhavan. Minister Basu will be present with two officials of the Department of Education and Chairman of the School Service Commission (SSC) Siddhartha Majumdar to sort out the issues.

Protests and hunger strikes continued

In the evening, unemployed teachers under the leadership of Abhigyan Sangram Manch began an indefinite hunger strike outside the SSC office. Protests have erupted across the state as several opposition parties join them. The issue of the teachers’ struggle has attracted great attention, and the meeting with the education minister the day after tomorrow is considered a joint point.

Teachers are hoping for “concrete promises” from Minister Bratya Basu at the meeting, but many believe it will either “sow hope” or “develop a roadmap” for addressing employment and retention issues.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education moves SC

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education has also moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction. The board is asking that the teachers who are employed now be kept in their jobs during this school year or until a new hiring process can take place. It underscores the need for urgent action to prevent disruption impacting education.

As the protests persist, the unemployed teachers are placing their hopes on a meeting with Bratya Basu, who is expected to be the key figure for the struggling teachers.
