[Watch] Glacier Breaks In Uttarakhand, Triggers Avalanche & Massive Floods

Chamoli (Uttarakhand): An avalanche was reported in Uttarakhand’s Tapovan area after a part of the Nandadevi glacier broke in Joshimath in Chamoli district on Sunday.

The avalanche was soon followed by a massive rise of water level in the Dhauli Ganga River, which resulted in several houses being destroyed in the area.

As many as 150 labourers, who were working on a power project in the area, are missing at the moment. Rescue operations are underway.

Floods have also been reported in Joshimath area.

According to reports, the floods have uprooted many houses in the area, leaving scores injured.

The Joshimath-Malari bridge, which is used by Army personnel to go to the border areas, has been washed away due to the flooding in Dhauli Ganga river. This bridge was.

The massive flooding has also damaged Rishiganga Power Project in Tapovan area.

UP Relief Commissioner has issued a disaster alert to all district magistrates of the state, India Today reported.

“Reports of the breaking of a part of Nandadevi Glacier in Uttarakhand has been received. The districts on the Ganga river need to be on high alert and continuous monitoring of water level needs to be done 24×7. If required, people should to be evacuated and taken to a safe place. NDRF, SDRF and PAC Flood Company are being given instructions to be on the highest alert. Please coordinate locally also,” the notice said.

Meanwhile, two teams of ITBP have reached the spot for rescue operations. “Three NDRF teams have been rushed from Dehradun and 3 additional teams will reach there with help of IAF chopper by evening. SDRF & local administration is already at spot,” MoS Home Nityanand Rai told ANI on the massive flooding in Dhauli Ganga.
