New Delhi: A unique divorce case in Ahmedabad has garnered attention after a husband cited the presence of stray dogs brought into their home by his wife as a reason for seeking divorce.
The husband alleged cruelty, claiming that the wife not only brought multiple stray dogs despite living in a society where pets were banned but also made him care for and feed the animals. Adding to his distress, he asserted that one of the dogs bit him when he insisted on sleeping on their bed.
The escalating number of dogs led to friction with neighbours, resulting in a police complaint filed in 2008. According to the husband, after the wife joined an animal rights group, she frequently filed police complaints against others and subjected him to abuse and humiliation when he refused to comply with certain demands.
Complicating the marital discord, the husband claimed that on April 1, 2007, the wife orchestrated a prank call involving a radio jockey alleging an affair, which caused him public embarrassment at his workplace.
The husband stated that the continuous stress adversely affected his physical health, leading to various dysfunctions. He sought divorce on grounds of cruelty and offered a monthly maintenance of ₹15 lakh, while the wife demanded ₹2 crore.
After the family court dismissed his petition, the husband appealed to the Gujarat High Court, where the next hearing is scheduled for December 1.
