Brazil’s young fast bowler Laura Cardoso made history in T20 International cricket by becoming the first player, male or female, to take nine wickets in a single T20I innings.
This was one of the most remarkable performances the sport has seen.
At just 21 years old, Cardoso bowled an incredible 3 overs, including 2 maidens, gave up only 4 runs, and took 9 wickets (3-2-4-9) at the BCA Kalahari Women’s T20I Tournament. Her performance led Brazil to a huge 189-run win over Lesotho in the 14th match.
Batting first, Brazil scored an impressive 202 runs. Lesotho, in response, managed only 13 runs in 6.2 overs. Cardoso’s bowling was outstanding: she took a hat-trick with the last three balls of one over, then grabbed two more wickets with the first two balls of her next over, making it five wickets in five balls. She took four wickets in her second over and finished with two more in her third.
The previous bests in T20I cricket: Bhutan’s Sonam Yeshey’s 8/7 in men’s T20Is and Indonesia’s Rohmalia Rohmalia’s 7-wicket haul in women’s T20Is.
Cardoso first made headlines in 2021 when she took Brazil’s first T20I hat-trick at just 16. Now, she has lifted Brazilian women’s cricket to new heights. Her success shows the rising talent in associate nations and inspires young cricketers everywhere.
This outstanding performance in Botswana will be remembered as a key moment in T20I cricket. It proves that even smaller cricketing nations can achieve world-class, record-breaking results.
