NewDelhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) said that the union government cannot make any Delhi-specific announcements in the upcoming Union Budget, which is slated to be presented on February 1. According to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which has been implemented following the Delhi Assembly elections announcement, it issues this directive.
Delhi will have one-phase voting for 70 constituencies, which will take place on 5 February, and results will be declared on 8 February, the ECI confirmed. Before an election, the MCC forbids financial provision or new schemes from being introduced that may influence voters.
“That the government should make no announcements or provisions in the budget that could tilt the electorate in favour of Delhi,” said Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. The purpose of this intervention is to ensure a level playing field for all political parties in the course of the election.
Stakes are high for all parties with 1.55 crore registered voters in Delhi, out of which over 84 lakh are male voters and around 71 lakh are female voters. With 62 seats under the bag in the last election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hopes to pull in a third straight victory for the Delhi Assembly.
Political tensions are rising, and all eyes will be on this ruling amid the elections to see how it will influence the strategies and the votes in the capital.
