Moscow/Kyiv: Tensions have escalated dramatically as Ukraine launched a significant incursion into Russian territory, marking the first time Ukrainian forces have crossed the border and attacked inside Russia since the war began. In response, Russia has declared a “federal-level” state of emergency in the Kursk region, with additional security forces deployed to counter the offensive.
The situation in the Kursk region has intensified, with fierce battles reported between Ukrainian and Russian forces. According to reports from the Times of India, the Ukrainian military has been attacking the region for the past four days. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that on Tuesday, over 300 soldiers from Ukraine’s 22nd Mechanized Brigade, supported by 11 tanks and more than 20 armored fighting vehicles, assaulted Russian border security posts near the settlements of Nikolaevo-Darino and Oleshnya.
In retaliation, Russian forces have bolstered their defenses in the Kursk area, deploying multiple rocket launchers, artillery guns, trailer-carrying tanks, and heavy armored units. The declaration of a federal-level emergency signals the gravity of the situation, typically reserved for scenarios involving significant casualties or substantial financial losses exceeding 500 million rubles (approximately $6 million).
Amid the escalating conflict, a separate incident in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region further aggravated the situation. A Russian missile strike targeted a shopping mall in a residential area, killing at least 11 people and injuring 44 others. The attack, described as an assault on a crowded area, was confirmed by Donetsk regional chief Vadim Filashkin in a Telegram post.
The incursion into Russian territory represents Kyiv’s most extensive attack on Russian soil since the conflict began, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing war. As both sides continue to exchange fire, the situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation in the coming days.
