Mumbai: In a significant development that deepens the ongoing political volatility in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) chief Uddhav Thackeray held an emergency strategy meeting with his remaining legislators on Monday. The high-stakes assembly at the party office, Shivalay, coincided with the commencement of the monsoon session of the state legislature. The meeting was hastily convened just hours after all six of the party’s rebel Lok Sabha MPs formally switched allegiance to the rival Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The mass defection of the six parliamentarians, including prominent leaders like Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Jadhav, Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, represents a crushing blow to the Thackeray camp. By moving together, the breakaway group comprises exactly two-thirds of the party’s original nine Lok Sabha members, a crucial threshold aimed at bypassing the legal hurdles of the anti-defection law. Adding to the palpable tension at the party headquarters, three state legislators, namely MLC Sunil Shinde along with MLAs Sanjay Potnis and Rahul Patil, were absent from the meeting. While party managers quickly clarified that the lawmakers had legitimate reasons, including poll-counting duties, the empty chairs inevitably triggered intense speculation within political circles.

For the common citizen of Maharashtra, this relentless realignment of political loyalties brings fresh concerns over governance. With public representatives consistently engaged in numerical survival and factional warfare, crucial regional challenges face the risk of administrative neglect. Recognizing this public sentiment, Thackeray attempted to shift the focus toward grassroots realities. He explicitly directed his remaining MLAs and MLCs to aggressively confront the ruling Mahayuti government on the floor of the house regarding pressing civic issues. These include the implementation of farm loan waivers, deteriorating law and order, rising crimes against women, and the growing menace of drug peddling across the state.

The outcome of this strategy session emphasizes that despite the severe institutional depletion, the Thackeray faction is digging in for a protracted legislative and public battle. Addressing the media briefly, Thackeray stated that the party would put forward its side at an appropriate time. The leadership concluded the solidarity meeting by instructing the remaining legislators to initiate extensive ground tours to reassure their local voter base, effectively signalling that the battle for the legacy of the regional outfit will now be fought aggressively in the upcoming electoral contests.
