Washington: In a dramatic escalation of US-Iran tensions, the Pentagon has reportedly drawn up a detailed blueprint for a ground war against Tehran, codenamed ‘Operation 5G’.

With President Trump expected to give the final nod after a high-level briefing, American forces are bracing for what could become one of the most high-stakes military campaigns in recent history.

According to well-placed sources, the five-phase operation aims to dismantle Iran’s military infrastructure in the Persian Gulf. Phase one involves destroying coastal bases with anti-ship missiles and sea drones. Subsequent phases include severing island connections, clearing mines from the strategic Strait of Hormuz with British assistance, capturing key islands like Kharg using Marine Commandos, and finally launching helicopter-borne assaults deep into Iranian territory to destroy missile sites and command centres.

The USS Tripoli has already arrived in the region, and up to 10,000 troops could be deployed. The plan, drawn up after emergency Pentagon meetings, draws hard lessons from the quagmires of Vietnam and Afghanistan, focusing on swift, decisive action to avoid prolonged losses. Air strikes alone have failed to subdue Iran, prompting this bold ground push.

Tehran, however, is no easy target. Iranian forces have spent years fortifying 1,500 km of coastline with tunnel networks, sea mines, drones, and missile launchers.

Officials have warned of fierce guerrilla resistance, vowing that any invading force will enter “hell” and may not return alive. Iran still possesses 70 per cent of its missile stockpile and can sustain combat for up to two years.

As the world watches with bated breath, the success or failure of Operation 5G could reshape the Middle East forever — and decide whether America avoids another costly entanglement or plunges into a new era of conflict.
