New Delhi: US President Donald Trump was nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for helping to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, ending the so-called “12 Day War.”

Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) sent a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee nominating Trump for his “extraordinary and historic” leadership. “President Trump’s leadership ended the armed conflict between Israel and Iran and prevented the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism from acquiring the deadliest weapon in the world,” the letter, seen by Fox News, said. Carter praised Trump for his efforts to de-escalate the conflict and roll back Iran’s nuclear program.

Trump announced the ceasefire, which took effect Tuesday night, June 24, during the 12-day conflict. “Israel and Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, ‘PEACE!’ I knew the time was NOW. The world and the Middle East are the real WINNERS!” he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The peace deal came on the heels of Israel’s preemptive strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites on June 13, which were followed by retaliatory rocket fire and U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites.

It’s not the first time Trump has been nominated for the award. In January 2025, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) nominated Trump for his 2024 election victory. On the Nobel Prize website, 338 candidates are in the running for the 2025 Peace Prize. Pakistan also nominated Trump for the award, with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar praising Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention” to help establish the India-Pakistan ceasefire in May 2025. However, India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, denied that the India-Pakistan truce was a result of U.S. mediation.

The Middle East is still a hotbed of conflict, with Israel claiming Iran violated the ceasefire by firing two ballistic missiles on Tuesday. Iran denied that there was a ceasefire, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X, “There is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire,” and that Iran would halt operations if Israel stopped its aggression by 4 a.m. Tehran time. Vice President JD Vance called the ceasefire a “historic moment,” while Sen. Lindsey Graham praised Trump’s “bold and brilliant” strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
