Trump Hotel Narrowly Escapes AI-Assisted Cybertruck Attack

LAS VEGAS: Las Vegas police have revealed that the man who exploded a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel on New Year’s Day used artificial intelligence tools to help him plot the attack, including ChatGPT.

The man who set off the blast, Matthew Livelsberger, 37, was a decorated Army Green Beret who fatally shot himself moments before the truck exploded. Seven people were wounded, but the hotel was mostly unaffected in the blast on 1 January.

‘It’s a game changer, and it’s concerning,’ said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill, who harshly criticised the use of AI in planning the attack. “I also know of no other case where ChatGPT was used to help build something in this country,” he said.

The search history for his ChatGPT use revealed searches on targets for explosives, ammo velocity, and the legality of fireworks in Arizona, investigators said. The soldier had also employed AI to gain knowledge as to how to build explosive devices, how to navigate legal loopholes to procure materials, and such things.

Before his Las Vegas entry, Livelsberger had filled the Cybertruck with racing-grade fuel, which then leaked from the vehicle. There were 32 kilograms of birdshot and 27 kilograms of pyrotechnic materials in the truck.

The black mystery of what triggered the blast, which officials believe may have been caused by the muzzle flash of Livelsberger’s gun, remains a black mystery. From his laptop, mobile phone, and smartwatch, recovered from the scene, they are still analysing data.

The triggering of the incident raises questions about the possible misuse of simple-to-reach AI technologies. Now law enforcement agencies are sharing information in response to this emerging threat.

The company invited to the ongoing investigation and responsible use of AI use through responsible use of AI, said OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
