Washington: America President Donald Trump announced Thursday his plan to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada would come into force March 4, 2025. A 25% tariff will be placed on imports from these two nations. He also warned China that a further 10% tariff would take effect on Chinese goods the same date.
Mexico, Canada, and China are major trading partners for the United States. The U.S. placing tariffs on all three countries at the same time will raise consumer prices here, and at a time when inflation remains an issue. In a post on Truth Social, Trump justified the tariffs by citing the unacceptably high level of drugs entering our country from Mexico and Canada.
Trump tied illegal immigration to the tariffs on America’s neighbours, saying, “We must not let this crisis lead to certain harm for the U.S.” We will impose the proposed tariffs as planned from March 4 unless there is a cessation or significant increase.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, for her part, offered to talk to Trump to ensure that tariffs would be avoided. Trump’s threats could change trade between the neighbouring countries so dramatically that they threaten the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a senior Canadian trade council official warned in the meantime.
