New York: After Russia launched its biggest aerial strike on Ukraine in the war, US President Donald Trump shared sharp criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian authorities have reported at least 12 deaths, including three children, and numerous injuries.
In his comments at Morristown Airport in New Jersey on Sunday, Trump said Putin’s behaviour was imprudent and unnecessary. I have no positive feelings about what Putin is doing at all. He keeps killing people, and now something strange is going on with him,” the President added. During our conversation, the man fires rockets into Kyiv and various cities. The statement followed Ukraine’s government’s claim that 298 drones and 69 missiles attacked Ukrainian airspace last night.
While negotiations for a ceasefire were ongoing, an attack on Ukraine occurred after Trump stated on May 19 that he and Putin had agreed to an immediate truce. Putin’s lack of attendance at the conference and Russia’s recent steps have made a quick settlement less likely. Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, denounced the strikes and accused Putin of keeping the war going. He also lashed out at the United States, the European Union, and other nations for what he saw as their inaction against Russia.
Trump, who is known for having good relations with Putin, went on to say he was considering applying more pressure to Russia by enacting new sanctions. Trump said, “I don’t like that he is launching rockets into cities and killing people, even though we were friends.” The former President said that if Putin tried to seize all of Ukraine, it might lead to Russia’s destruction, and he blamed the ongoing conflict on Zelenskyy and Biden, insisting the dispute would not have arisen if he had remained US President.
During the assault, both Russia and Ukraine released 1,000 held prisoners each in exchange, marking the largest prisoner swap so far in the war. Still, Russia’s increased military aggression has led many people worldwide to condemn its actions strongly. The Ukrainian government stated that people aged eight, 12, and 17 were among the civilians injured in the Zhytomyr region as a result of the violence.
Officials from Britain, France, Germany, and Italy have told Trump to keep up the pressure on Russia by using sanctions and diplomacy. He said on Telegram that each attack by Russia requires new sanctions since such actions are the only way to convince Moscow to end the fighting.
After being in office for four years, Trump encounters challenges to his promise to conclude the war one day after taking office. Recent moves by Russia have caused more tension, and analysts believe Russia might be making them deliberately to weaken talks designed to bring peace. At present, a ceasefire remains unclear since both sides are involved in long-range fighting, and the violence continues.
