Kolkata: A massive political storm has erupted in West Bengal after the Trinamool Congress alleged that the long serving personal security officers of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were abruptly withdrawn from her Kolkata residence. The party has termed the late night administrative move a calculated attempt to compromise her safety, setting off a fierce confrontation between the opposition and the newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state.

The controversy unfolded late on Wednesday night when the Personal Security Officers who had protected Banerjee for over two decades were reportedly reassigned and removed from her house. Raising an immediate alarm, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Derek O’Brien posted a video from outside her residence at around 9:30 PM, claiming that the former Chief Minister was inside the house with no active security. In a dramatic show of protest, O’Brien parked his personal vehicle across the main gates to block the entrance, declaring that he would stand guard himself.

The sudden restructuring of the security layout triggered sharp reactions from top opposition leaders. Trinamool Congress parliamentarian Mahua Moitra strongly condemned the development, labeling it as a deliberate humiliation of a three term Chief Minister and seven term Member of Parliament. Moitra drew a contrast with the top tier security cover provided to other prominent social figures, questioning why a mass leader was being put at such risk. Rajya Sabha lawmaker Sagarika Ghose also joined the chorus, accusing the ruling administration of engaging in vindictive maneuvers.

The Trinamool Congress official handles launched a direct attack against West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, describing the action as an abuse of power. The party statement alleged that separating a prominent leader from her trusted security apparatus was a calculated political move rather than an administrative routine. The development has sent ripples across the regional political landscape, sparking intense debate regarding the protocols governing the security details of former high ranking public representatives.

While the opposition maintains that the sudden withdrawal poses a grave threat to the veteran leader, an official statement or clarification from the state home department regarding the security reshuffle is still awaited. Political experts note that security reevaluations are standard practice during administrative transitions, though the midnight timing has turned an administrative deployment into a volatile political standoff. The unfolding situation highlights the deep political polarization in the state where routine security protocols quickly morph into high stakes confrontations.
