Bhopal: On Thursday in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, a sad catastrophe happened whereby eight people perished drowning in the sludge of a well in Kundawat village. So far, six bodies have been recovered from the well; the rescue effort is still in progress to locate the two more missing bodies.

The mishap occurred at Chhaigaon Makan’s police station vicinity. After the Navratri celebration, villagers had descended the ancient well to clean it for the idol immersion of the Ganagaur Mata. The first three people descended the well, but their sounds stopped soon. Five more people then dropped down to find out what had happened to them; their voices stopped too.

Terrorised, the residents immediately told the nearby police. Teams of ambulances, Pindhana police, and Chhaigaon Makan cops hurried to the scene. Arriving to oversee the operation also were Khandwa’s District Collector Rishav Gupta, Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Rai, and SDM Bajrang Bahadur Singh.

The rescue personnel began working fast to save the victims, and it was later discovered that muck and waste combined with hazardous gases in the well most certainly led to the tragedy. Six bodies were successfully recovered by the police, fire department, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which coordinated the victim rescue operation. Rescue efforts for the remaining two victims are ongoing.

The three villagers had descended into the well to get it ready for the immersion ritual, according to SP Manoj Kumar Rai. All eight were stranded when the five others came to save them. Declared a relief of four lakh rupees to the victim’s family, Khandwa District Collector expressed sympathies for the dead.
