New Delhi: In a remarkable thaw, US-China ties soared to unprecedented heights following high-level talks, signalling an end to the bruising trade war.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chinese Admiral Dong Jun met in Malaysia, pledging enhanced military dialogue to dispel misunderstandings and foster peace.
Hegseth, posting on X, enthused, “President Trump and I agree – US-China relations are better than ever. My positive meeting with Admiral Dong built on the historic Trump-Xi summit in South Korea.” He hailed Trump’s “G2 meeting” for laying foundations for enduring cooperation and stability.
The breakthrough stemmed from the APEC summit in Busan’s sidelines, where President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping struck deals. Trump announced slashing tariffs on China from 57% to 47%, resuming massive soybean purchases – a boon for American farmers. “President Xi’s reliable steps open paths to lasting peace and prosperity,” Trump posted, terming the meeting “fantastic.”
Experts view these actions as a pivotal shift, bolstering global economic stability amid prior tensions. With direct military-to-military channels reopened, both nations aim to prevent escalations, marking a new era of trust.
As soybean imports restart and tariffs ease, the world watches if this détente heralds sustained harmony between the superpowers.
