Nagpur/Mumbai: In a major crackdown on hazardous cosmetics, the Indian government has imposed a strict ban on “Gauri Beauty Cream,” a fairness product manufactured in Pakistan. The decisive action comes after several women in Nagpur developed severe kidney-related ailments following its use.
Marketed aggressively with promises of skin lightening, the cream caught the attention of health authorities when alarming medical cases surfaced. Investigations led the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to launch a comprehensive probe into the product’s chemical composition.
The FDA’s laboratory analysis revealed shocking details. The beauty cream was found to be laced with highly toxic substances, notably high levels of mercury, a heavy metal notorious for causing severe renal and neurological damage. Furthermore, authorities discovered that the packaging lacked basic mandatory safety information, including an expiration date, putting consumers at immense risk.
According to media reports, several affected women in Nagpur had been purchasing the banned cream through online e-commerce websites, with some having used it consistently for over two years before the health complications emerged.
Following the FDA’s alarming findings, the government swiftly banned the import and sale of Gauri Beauty Cream across the country. The FDA has issued a stern public advisory, strongly urging citizens to immediately stop purchasing or using the product due to the grave health hazards it poses.
A statewide administrative drive is currently underway in Maharashtra. Health and civic authorities are conducting extensive raids to confiscate the illegal stock of the cream from local markets and beauty stores. Officials have warned of stringent legal action against any vendors or online platforms found selling the hazardous cosmetic product.
The incident highlights the growing dangers of unregulated cosmetic products sold online and underscores the need for greater consumer awareness regarding chemical ingredients in skincare.
