New Delhi: Tomato farmers across the country can significantly reduce crop wastage and increase their earnings by adopting modern cultivation, storage and processing techniques, experts say. With tomatoes being one of the most perishable vegetables, growers often suffer heavy losses due to price crashes and lack of proper storage facilities.
Agriculture experts believe that scientific farming methods and post-harvest management can help farmers earn better profits while ensuring that the produce does not go to waste. Improved grading, packaging and cold storage systems are being seen as key solutions to the long-standing problem.
Farmers are also being encouraged to process excess tomatoes into products such as puree, ketchup and sauce instead of selling them at throwaway prices during periods of oversupply. Experts say value addition can help growers earn nearly double the income compared to traditional selling methods.
The report highlighted that modern irrigation systems, especially drip irrigation, can improve tomato quality and reduce water usage. At the same time, disease-resistant seed varieties and balanced fertiliser management can increase overall productivity.
Agricultural specialists have also advised farmers to directly connect with local markets, food processing units and online platforms to secure better prices for their produce. Proper harvesting and transportation methods can further minimise damage during supply.
With rising demand for processed tomato products in urban markets, experts believe farmers adopting these modern techniques may gain long-term financial stability and reduce dependence on fluctuating mandi prices.
