To Overcome Staff Crunch, Indian Railways Start Recruiting Ex-Employees

New Delhi: In its fresh and latest action plan to tackle the existing problem of staff crisis, Indian Railways decided to recruit the retired employees on contractual terms. The deal is provided to people who retired before 65 years since the railway system plans on staffing approximately twenty-five thousand various positions in different parts of the country.

This is a move the Railway Board thinks will help in cushioning the organization from the effects of staff arrivals at the workplace, which have been an issue. Such jobs can be applied by retired employees, who have worked in supervisory capacity or those who were trackmen.

Main Facts About the Re-employment Plan
The rehiring will be for the initial period of two years and may be renewed further. Regional general managers have been empowered to approve the application from the medical fitness tests and performance of the past five years.

This is paramount and qualifying if the applicant has good grades on his/her confidential reports of the last five years and none of the applicant has any vigilance or departmental action cases pending against him/her.

There are no provisions for DA accommodate by this policy, HRA, or Increment Benefits
The re-employed staff would receive fixed remuneration equivalent to the last drawn wages; however, their basic pension would be recovered from it. Importantly, they will not benefit from dearness allowance for the contractual period forms of employment or House Rent Allowance or salary increments.

This decision comes in the wake of rising railway accidents and acute shortage of staff especially in the North Western Railway region where the authority is short of 10,000 employees.

A Step Necessary for Indian Railways
It has been pointed out by the Railway Board that this is the appropriate course to take on grounds that it seeks to meet the current operational demands of the railways. Indian Railways is trying to get better services for its customers through staffing experienced personnel because staff shortage work affects the efficiency of train services.

With continued growth of the train organization and services across Indian Railways, several plans to hire the retired staff are expected to reduce workload pressure, thus increasing safe rail operations.
