Mumbai: In a match defined by Quinton de Kock’s scintillating century and a mountain of runs at the Wankhede, it was a moment of mid-air magic from Shreyas Iyer that ultimate stole the headlines.
Following a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians on Thursday, the Punjab Kings captain jokingly claimed that his acrobatic catch to dismiss Hardik Pandya was the “key” to halting a Mumbai juggernaut that seemed destined for a total well beyond 200.
Punjab Kings, who now sit atop the IPL 2026 table with four wins from five matches, chased down a formidable target of 196 with almost three overs to spare. However, Iyer’s post-match analysis focused less on the ease of the chase and more on a critical shift in momentum during the first innings.
The ‘Catch of the Season’
The turning point arrived in the 18th over. Mumbai Indians were motoring along, with Hardik Pandya attempting to launch Marco Jansen over long-on to set up a grandstand finish. Iyer, sprinting to his left and realising his momentum would carry him over the boundary rope, intercepted the ball with a “reverse cup,” flicked it back into play while airborne, and allowed Xavier Bartlett to complete the catch.
When asked by commentator Ian Bishop what the secret was to pulling the game back when Mumbai looked set for a massive total, Iyer replied with a laugh: “I think my catch!”
While delivered with a grin, the statement carried weight. Pandya’s dismissal for 14 strangled Mumbai’s late charge, restricting them to 195/6 despite De Kock’s unbeaten 112.
A Leader’s Praise
Beyond his own fielding heroics, Iyer was quick to laud the burgeoning maturity of his teammates, particularly Prabhsimran Singh, whose unbeaten 80 off 39 balls anchored the chase.
“Prabhsimran has truly raised the bar,” Iyer noted. “In previous seasons, we saw him swing wildly— he got runs, but it was high-risk. Now, he’s showing the maturity to finish games. He is growing with every outing.”
Iyer also highlighted the “positive recipe” within the squad, crediting a string of successful tosses and a collective fearlessness for their unbeaten streak. “We have a lot of positive players ready to go out there and express themselves. The fans are showering us with love, and the following is only going up,” he added.
Mumbai’s Misery Continues
For Mumbai Indians, the defeat marks a dismal fourth consecutive loss in the 2026 campaign. Despite a record 122-run stand between De Kock and Naman Dhir, the five-time champions appeared toothless in the face of Iyer and Prabhsimran’s 139-run partnership.
As Punjab Kings march to the top of the standings, Iyer’s “moment of magic” on the boundary remains the defining image of a season where everything seems to be going right for the men in red.
