Lucknow: At the moment, Uttar Pradesh has been suffering from intense cold wave conditions with the temperature plummeting drastically and bringing about great trouble to the residents. A ‘Cold Day’ alert has been issued for the very first time this winter, and this signal will be for such days when temperatures are much lower and therefore the chillers are simulative in the absence of diffusion light. The past 24 hours have marked the average minimum temperature in the state descending from 10 degrees Celsius to around 5 degrees Celsius.
On the other hand, thick fog that has covered about 30 cities in the state as of Friday morning has created a major impact on transportation, bringing it to a halt and halting daily life. The Meteorological Department has declared that the cold climate condition is likely to go on for five days at its peak level.
A Brief on Cold Days and Cold Waves
The phrase ‘Cold Day’ is explained as the day on which the minimum temperature would be 10 degrees Celsius less than the average, and the maximum temperature would be 4.5 degrees Celsius jumped easily. In hilly areas, a day is counted as a cold day when the minimum temperature is below zero and the maximum temperature is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees lower than the average temperature of that day. A ‘Severe Cold Day’ is determined when the maximum temperature is more than 6.5 degrees Celsius.
In cold wave conditions other than the cold days, the minimum temperature of the plains must be 4 degrees Celsius or below, says the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This is also called a cold wave if the temperature suddenly drops as low as -4.5 to -6.4 degrees from a previous temperature that was below 10 degrees Celsius. Usually, such climate conditions usually occur in December and January.
Regions that are typically affected by these cold waves are such areas as Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. States like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, along with some others, also witness these harsh weather conditions.
Current Weather Conditions
Recently, cold and dry northwestern winds have swept down from the mountains into northern India, affecting areas like Haryana and Delhi NCR. Meanwhile, a western disturbance has reached the mountains, with another expected between January 4 and 6. The IMD forecasts that after this western disturbance passes, there may be an increase in minimum temperatures in the coming days.
Amid the rising cold weather conditions, the government has advised residents to take suitable precautions to both lessen the impact of the weather and safeguard their health.
