New Delhi: Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in India’s 30 member probable squad for the 2026 Asian Games, while two of the country’s biggest stars, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill, have been left out of the preliminary list submitted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The Asian Games will be held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, with the men’s cricket competition scheduled between September 24 and October 3. The BCCI has already informed the IOA about a pool of 30 probable players from which the final squad will be selected.

The biggest talking point from the list is the inclusion of 15 year old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who emerged as one of the standout performers of IPL 2026. The young batter scored 776 runs during the season and has rapidly become one of Indian cricket’s most exciting prospects. His performances appear to have convinced selectors to consider him for a major international multi sport event.

Equally significant are the omissions of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. According to reports, Gill is expected to lead India in the ODI series against the West Indies, which overlaps with the Asian Games schedule. As a result, selectors are preparing separate squads to manage the congested international calendar. The West Indies tour includes three ODIs and five T20 Internationals between September 27 and October 17, creating a scheduling challenge for the Indian team management.

Reports also suggest that Suryakumar Yadav’s exclusion could indicate a shift in the BCCI’s long term planning. It is believed that selectors are looking ahead to future global tournaments, including the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup, with younger players increasingly entering the national setup.

Several prominent names feature in the longlist, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Reports indicate that Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma are among the contenders being considered for leadership responsibilities if selected for the final Asian Games squad.

India enters the tournament as the defending gold medallist, having won the men’s cricket event at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou. The final squad selection is expected to balance experience with youth as the BCCI prepares to field competitive teams across overlapping international assignments.
