Ranchi: In what turned out to be the most talked-about marriage in Jharkhand, and bizarre one at that, a groom sent his brother as proxy after police arrested him for attempting a third marriage.
Having sent his substitute, he remained content that at least his brother would save the marriage, but little did he know that he was putting him into more trouble.
As the brother turned up at the bride’s place, he was greeted by her family with suspicious looks. All hell broke loose at the marriage mandap after they discovered that the groom who has turned up was a surrogate. He was immediately taken hostage. They were not interested in the substitute and demanded that their wedding expenses — a sum of Rs 2 lakh — be paid back by the absentee bridegroom.
It all happened on Thursday. The man Karim, eager on a third marriage, was picked up the police as he was about to step out. His other two enraged wives, decided to teach him a lesson. The rung up the police to foil his wishes. The groom then sent his brother, Rahim, to marry the bride in his place, police told the Hindustan Times.
But when Rahim turned up for the wedding instead of Karim, the bride’s party became furious — they held the bridegroom’s party hostage after seeing that their original choice had been replaced.
“We had brought Karim to the police station after his two wives objected to his third marriage. We told him about the legal consequences of his actions and, eventually, he agreed to stay with his two [existing] wives. He said that he was going for the third marriage under pressure from his mother. We’ve released him after he agreed to stay with his two wives and take care of them,” Ponam Kujur, officer-in-charge (OIC) of Kiriburu police station told the paper.
The OIC added that Karim’s two wives lived together with him, and they had told the police they’d have no problem continuing with this arrangement if their husband dropped his plan to marry again. “Karim has been living with his two wives for the past six-seven years,” she said.
Karim’s first marriage was to a girl from Noamundi; and the second marriage to a tribal girl from Kumirta village nearby. Women police reached Karim’s house when he was setting out with the baaraat for his third marriage in Sini on Thursday. Hindustan Times reported that Karim had sent his brother as he did not want the marriage to fall apart.
