New Delhi: The Supreme Court has instructed the government to establish a high-power committee to report on reforms for the National Testing Agency (NTA), particularly in light of concerns surrounding the NEET UG examination. Originally tasked with submitting a report by September 30, the Union Education Ministry has now requested an extension of this deadline.
In a formal application to the Supreme Court, the ministry has asked for an additional three weeks, pushing the deadline to October 21. The Ministry of Education highlighted that the high-power committee has conducted 22 meetings focused on reforming the NTA and submitted a draft report on September 18. However, the committee indicated that more time is needed to ensure transparency and eliminate errors in the examination process.
The Ministry of Education further informed the Supreme Court that it has received 37,144 suggestions via the MY.GOV portal from a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and experts. Consultations have also taken place with examination agencies, state governments, law enforcement officials, academics, technical specialists, global testing authorities, and various regulatory bodies.
In its earlier ruling on August 2, the Supreme Court mandated the central government to appoint this high-power committee to enhance the NTA’s examination processes. The court specified that the ministry must make decisions on the committee’s recommendations within a month of receiving the report. Additionally, the ministry is required to develop an action plan based on its decisions and report back within two weeks of implementing those recommendations.
The NTA, an autonomous agency under the Ministry of Education, conducts numerous national-level examinations, including NEET UG, UGC NET, CUET UG, and CUET PG. Established in November 2017, its primary role is to facilitate smooth examination processes and announce results efficiently.
