Sultanpur: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is set to face further legal proceedings in a defamation case linked to his alleged objectionable remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with a Sultanpur court fixing the next hearing for June 17, 2026.

The case goes back nearly eight years to the Karnataka Assembly election campaign, when Gandhi allegedly made remarks against Shah, who was then the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Following the statement, Sultanpur based BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a complaint before the MP MLA Court, which later allowed proceedings against the Congress leader.

The latest development came after Mishra’s counsel moved the sessions court challenging the rejection of a plea related to voice matching. The plea sought comparison of the audio and video recording of the press conference earlier submitted as evidence with Gandhi’s actual voice.

Advocate Santosh Pandey, appearing for the complainant, said the challenge was filed before the sessions court on Thursday and the court accepted it for hearing. He added that Rahul Gandhi would have to submit his response in the matter.

Rahul Gandhi’s counsel Kashi Prasad Shukla said the voice sampling matter has been listed for May 30, while the main case is scheduled for June 17.

According to the report, Gandhi has been on bail in the case since February 20, 2025. He had also appeared before the court earlier and recorded his statement, calling the case politically motivated and denying the allegations against him.
