Srinagar: The unity of the opposition, on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) faced a setback when Omar Abdullah from the National Conference openly disagreed with the Congress partys worries, about EVM tampering within the INDIA alliance.
In an interview, with PTI the ex Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir conveyed a message to the Congress party about their approach towards EVM results saying that they shouldn’t cherry pick when to accept or reject them based on election outcomes. “It’s inconsistent to cheer after winning over 100 seats, through EVMs and then complain on about the machines when the results don’t favor you ” Abdullah asserted confidently.
When asked about echoing the BJPs stance on the issue at hand Abdullah quickly responded with a firm ” not “. Continued with,”Nope it’s just, about recognizing what’s correct.” The NC leader stressed that his statements are rooted in his principles than commitments, to any alliance highlighting his backing of the Central Vista project as proof of his thought process.
Abdullah explained that he holds a view, from the belief and sees the Central Vista project in Delhi as a beneficial initiative; he considers the construction of the new Parliament building essential due, to the outdated nature of the previous structure.
These comments come at a time after the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections results were announced recently; the National Conference Congress alliance experienced mixed outcomes, in the elections held in the region. The National Conference secured 42 seats out of the 90 member assembly while the Congress party only managed to win six seats in total. There have been murmurs within party circles expressing dissatisfaction, over Congresss campaign strategies and efforts during the elections; some feel that most of the coalitions responsibilities were carried by the National Conference.
Abdullahs viewpoint, on EVMs poses a challenge to the oppositions storyline by indicating that political parties must either fully embrace the system or abstain from engagement entirely.”If there are reservations about EVMs ” he stressed,”ones stance should stay unwavering ” thus prompting doubts, about the oppositions approach of centering on EVM related issues.
This public argument shows increasing tensions, within the opposition coalition as the National Conference appears ready to diverge on opposition issues. The situation could greatly affect the unity of the opposition as different alliance members manage their connections, in settings.
