New Delhi: Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi and party President Mallikarjun Kharge have been invited to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, scheduled to be held on January 22.
Nripendra Misra and other well-known individuals led a delegation from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust that extended the invitation. Former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and HD Deve Gowda, as well as former President Ram Nath Kovind, have also received invitations.
The ceremony will mark the installation of the deity of Lord Rama in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, which is being built at the site where the Babri Masjid once stood.
Around 8,000 people are expected to attend the event, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The Congress party has not yet confirmed whether Gandhi and Kharge will attend the ceremony. However, sources close to the party leadership said that they are likely to accept the invitation.
The invitation to Gandhi and Kharge is being seen as a sign of the BJP government’s desire to reach out to the opposition on the issue of the Ram temple. The Congress party has been a vocal critic of the BJP’s handling of the Ayodhya dispute, but it has also expressed its support for the construction of the Ram temple.
The Pran Pratishtha ceremony is expected to be a major event in Indian politics and religion. It will be the culmination of a decades-long campaign by Hindu groups to build a temple at the site of the Babri Masjid.
