New Delhi: In a lifeline for Delhi’s construction workers grappling with livelihood losses due to anti-pollution measures, the Delhi government has announced a one-time relief of Rs 10,000 per worker.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveiled the scheme, targeting over 10 lakh registered construction workers affected by the city’s recurring work bans under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
With air quality worsening, construction activities have been halted, leaving daily-wage earners in distress.
Gupta, addressing a press conference, assured swift disbursal of funds through the Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board.
The aid aims to ease financial strain for workers, many of whom migrate from states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “We stand with our workers during this crisis,” Gupta said, adding that the government is also exploring long-term solutions like skill training for alternative livelihoods during pollution curbs.
The announcement comes amid criticism over Delhi’s air quality management, with the AQI hovering in the “severe’ category. While construction bans are crucial for curbing dust, they have hit workers hard, prompting protests from labour unions. The Rs 10,000 relief, funded by the state’s welfare cess, is a step towards balancing environmental needs with economic support.
Workers have welcomed the move but urge faster implementation. This aid provides hope to those affected by Delhi’s annual smog crisis.
