Hinduism features 18 sacred texts known as Puranas, with one of the most significant being the Garuda Purana, attributed to Lord Vishnu and providing detailed teachings about karma and consequences from our actions, both beneficial and bad. Also referred to as Vaishnav Purana due to this association with Lord Vishnu as its central deity in this scripture.
The Garuda Purana asserts that all individuals reap the consequences of their actions both during life and posthumously, giving each person an opportunity to perceive how their choices have an effect. It provides various signs to indicate when someone’s death may be near and gives them time to prepare. Furthermore, one key belief of this Purana states that souls remain within homes for 13 days postmortem; during such a time period, it is frequently read aloud from the Garuda Purana.
Textual evidence indicates that people may begin sensing the onset of death up to six months before it happens, with specific signs appearing during their final months, weeks and days indicating imminent demise.
According to Garuda Purana, when people cannot perceive their nose with their hands, it indicates imminent death, and when people cannot smell the fragrance from lit lamps during prayers, they don’t seem as important, which also suggests an imminent end of life for that individual.
Another indicator is associated with ears: when someone cannot hear sounds even after closing their ears with fingers, this may signal their imminent death. Also, any time their reflection in water or oil becomes blurry or disappears entirely, this could portend imminent doom within one month.
One unsettling sign noted in the Purana is when a dog persistently follows someone for more than four days – it is considered an indicator that death could soon follow, and, according to Garuda Purana, when this occurs, the messengers of Yama, death’s god, can sometimes appear before death itself occurs.
Palm lines can also serve as an indicator. As death nears, their presence may fade or disappear altogether—providing individuals with an early glimpse of what will eventually come their way. Understanding and anticipating what lies ahead allows individuals to better prepare and adjust.
Hindu scriptures state that death can often be signalled through physical and spiritual signs, with Garuda Purana emphasising how people can predict when their time will come based on these physical and spiritual indicators.
