Jaipur: In another shocking statement by a political leader, state Parliamentary Affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal said that Rajasthan is No. 1 in rape cases as it’s a ‘state of men’. That, too, in the Rajasthan assembly.
“We are at number one in rape cases… there’s no doubt. Why are we ahead in rape cases?… Rajasthan has been the state of men,” Dhariwal said while replying to a question in the state assembly on Wednesday.
Not surprisingly, Dhariwal’s comment sparked controversy.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma pulled up Dhariwal in no uncertain terms.
“Rajasthan government has ministers like these that’s why women of the state are suffering gruesome gender crimes and police just don’t do anything. How will women of the state feel safe if it has ministers like these? NCW India is taking strong action against Mr Dhariwal,” Sharma tweeted.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad shared on Twitter a clip of Dhariwal speaking in the Assembly and accused the minister of ‘legitimising rape’.
“Shocking. Disgusting. But not surprising. LEGITIMISING RAPE,” Shehzad tweeted.
Rajasthan BJP chief Satish Poonia said Dhariwal insulted women and brought down the dignity of men.
“The shameless confession about the state being number one in rape and insulting women in name of men is not only an insult to the women of the state but it has also brought down the dignity of men. Priyanka Gandhi ji what will you say now, what will you do?” Poonia tweeted.
