Kolkata: An inhumane incident has come to light from Kolkata, West Bengal, where a husband abandoned his wife at the hospital during treatment and ran away. No other facility will take her, either — and so the hospital, in turn, refused to hold onto her. The institution has consequently thrown the matter into court.
The report further states the woman was under treatment at Apollo Multispecialty Hospital following a car accident in September 2021. She had multiple head injuries, resulting in neurosurgery and other surgeries. The woman could not speak, and the lower part of her body remained paralysed to this day, despite undergoing surgeries. When her condition had improved, the hospital management requested her husband to take her back home, but he declined.
It was alleged that the man, over the course of the day, had refused repeated requests to take his wife home. So, the hospital turned to the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission, sharing the matter with it. The hospital then escalated the case to the court. During proceedings, the hospital’s lawyer told the judge the woman had been through numerous operations during her time in the hospital.
The insurance cover (6 lakh rupees) of the woman had already expired, and the hospital bill for her treatment had now climbed to 1 crore rupees. Judge Amrita Sinha questioned Jayprakash Gupta about his refusal to take his wife home. The husband said that he runs a petty shop and does not have the money to take care of his wife. The court has ordered the Advocate General to appear before the court on April 9 as well, and also the husband needs to be present.
