Dhaka: In a strong and direct message to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the current administration in Bangladesh has openly challenged her to face trial, stating she is welcome to hire the best lawyers in the world for her defense. The sharp remarks highlight the escalating political and legal friction surrounding her highly speculated return to the country.
Zahid Ur Rahman, the Information and Strategy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, made these bold statements during a recent media briefing. Addressing the ongoing rumors about her possible homecoming, he made it abundantly clear that Hasina would be treated strictly as a convicted criminal upon her arrival in Dhaka.
He categorically stated that the current government welcomes her return solely to ensure that the legal process is completed and justice is served. Expressing what he described as overwhelming public sentiment, the advisor noted that the citizens of Bangladesh want her to face capital punishment for the atrocities committed during her regime. He firmly added that if the court upholds the sentence, the death penalty will be executed as demanded by the people, and she is entirely free to bring the most capable legal minds globally to defend her case.
The veteran Awami League leader was forced to resign and abruptly flee the nation on August 5, 2024, following massive and violent student led street protests. Since her dramatic exit, she has been residing in India as a political refugee. Her safety is currently being managed under a highly secure environment monitored by top Indian intelligence and security agencies.
Her legal troubles within Bangladesh mounted significantly last November when a special tribunal in Dhaka sentenced her to death in absentia. The severe judicial verdict was based on grave charges of orchestrating brutal crackdowns on civilians and committing crimes against humanity during the widespread student uprisings of 2024.
However, Sheikh Hasina has completely rejected the judicial verdict from her base in India. The former prime minister continuously maintains that the death sentence, criminal convictions, and all associated charges are entirely politically motivated and strategically designed to permanently erase her from national politics. The unfolding situation continues to cast a long shadow over the diplomatic relations between neighboring countries and the future political landscape of Bangladesh.
