Mumbai: Maharashtra’s political landscape is witnessing a fresh round of intense speculation following a high level meeting between Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the Vidhan Bhavan on Wednesday. The encounter, which took place within the Deputy Chief Minister’s office, has fueled rumors regarding a potential realignment of power in the state.
Sharad Pawar had arrived at the Vidhan Bhavan to attend a high level committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, focused on the long standing Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute. The meeting was also attended by key leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and Union Minister Narayan Rane. Following these official proceedings, the veteran leader held a separate meeting with Eknath Shinde, which reportedly took place in a “cordial environment.”
While official sources described the meeting as a courtesy call to discuss matters of state interest, the timing has triggered significant political chatter. The interaction comes amid mounting reports of internal pressure within the NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction. Sources suggest that several legislators from the party are increasingly concerned about the stagnation of development projects in their constituencies and are reportedly urging the leadership to explore a tie-up with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to secure necessary funding and political stability.
The discourse around a possible alliance has been amplified by recent political shifts, including the crossover of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs to the Eknath Shinde faction. Furthermore, recent meetings between senior NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil and BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde have added to the speculation.
However, party leaders have been quick to downplay any talk of a formal alliance. Shashikant Shinde, the NCP (SP) state president, dismissed the rumors, stating that the meeting was merely an opportunity for the party chief to interact with elected representatives during the legislative session and review the current situation regarding state-wide rainfall and development. Similarly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently refuted claims that the ruling alliance was seeking further expansion or attempting to engineer a split within Sharad Pawar’s party.
As the legislative session continues, the meeting remains a significant talking point. While the leadership maintains that the focus remains on state-level issues, observers believe the ongoing dialogue reflects the high stakes involved for opposition parties as they navigate the evolving political dynamics of Maharashtra ahead of future electoral cycles.
