Mumbai: The Central government has upgraded the security of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, granting him Z-plus security. This comes as the state gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections. Sharad Pawar, who already had Z-plus security from the Maharashtra state government, accepted the additional protection offered by the Centre. With this upgrade, 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel will now accompany Pawar in his convoy.
The decision to enhance Pawar’s security was made following a recent review by central agencies, which assessed his routine and work locations. The move reflects the heightened political atmosphere in Maharashtra as the state prepares for elections, expected to be held in October-November, though no official announcement has been made yet.
In India, security for Very Very Important Persons (VVIPs) is provided by both the central and state governments, based on the level of perceived threat. The Z-plus category, the highest level of security in the country, includes a total of 55 security personnel, comprising CRPF personnel, National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, and police officers. These commandos are specially trained in martial arts and equipped with modern weapons to ensure the safety of VVIPs.
Z-plus security is typically reserved for top officials and leaders, including the Prime Minister and state Chief Ministers. The recent upgrade in Pawar’s security underscores the significance of the upcoming elections in Maharashtra and the central government’s commitment to safeguarding key political figures during this period.
