Mumbai: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup, has been training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. However, uncertainties still loom over his return to international cricket as the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia approaches. With questions being raised about his fitness and availability, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has finally addressed the concerns.
Earlier, there were reports suggesting that Shami could make a comeback during the India vs Bangladesh Test series scheduled for September. However, it has now been confirmed that Shami will neither feature in the Duleep Trophy nor the Bangladesh series. The veteran pacer may be seen returning to competitive cricket in the Ranji Trophy, depending on his fitness, before India’s three-match Test series against New Zealand in mid-October.
In a recent interaction with ANI, Jay Shah clarified Shami’s situation, stating, “Whether Mohammed Shami plays against Australia or not depends solely on his fitness. The decision will be based on the NCA’s report.”
Shami’s absence has sparked discussions, particularly because of his remarkable performances in past editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He has taken 40 wickets in just 11 matches, making him one of the most successful Indian fast bowlers in the history of the series. Among Indian pacers, only Zaheer Khan (61), Ishant Sharma (59), and Umesh Yadav (51) have more wickets in this prestigious contest.
On a related note, there were rumours suggesting that VVS Laxman’s tenure as President of the NCA was coming to an end. However, Jay Shah has put those speculations to rest by confirming that Laxman, who has held the position since 2021, will continue in his role.
