Separatist Leader Syed Saleem Geelani Joins Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP Ahead Of Kashmir Elections

Srinagar: As assembly elections loom in Kashmir, political activity has intensified, with various parties announcing candidates and leaders switching allegiances. In a significant move, Syed Saleem Geelani, a prominent separatist leader and former member of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, has joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by Mehbooba Mufti.

Geelani’s decision to transition from separatism to mainstream politics comes just ahead of the assembly elections. Upon joining the PDP, Geelani expressed his commitment to serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir, regardless of his political alignment. “The issues that I have been fighting for as a separatist leader are now central to mainstream politics,” Geelani stated, explaining his decision to embrace a new political path.

Mehbooba Mufti, the PDP chief, welcomed Geelani’s move, describing it as a reinforcement of the party’s mission. “PDP is not contesting elections for the sake of power but to alleviate the suffering of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mufti declared. She emphasised Geelani’s alignment with her party’s vision and expressed optimism that his entry, along with other notable leaders, would strengthen the party.

Mufti also took the opportunity to critique the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alleged influence over the election process, citing previous instances where election dates were changed without clear reasons. She appealed for a fair and transparent electoral process, urging local officials to ensure impartiality.

With Geelani’s entry and other significant defections, the PDP aims to enhance its position in the upcoming elections, presenting itself as a party focused on the well-being of the Kashmiri people amidst a heated political environment.
