Kolkata: The nation is seething with anger following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident has sparked widespread protests, with people taking to the streets, demanding justice for the young woman. The victim’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room, while her parents waited outside for hours, unable to see their daughter until later, following an intervention by the Chief Minister. This claim was made by the victim’s mother during a court hearing.
As the investigation unfolds, new and troubling information has come to light. Despite a ban on entry for doctors and journalists to the seminar room where the body was found, several ‘outsiders’ were reportedly seen at the scene. A video, accessed by TV9 Bangla, allegedly shows these individuals in the room, raising serious questions about their presence and potential interference with the crime scene. However, the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
Among those reportedly seen in the video is Shantanu Dey, a lawyer with connections to former hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh. Dey, who has been described as Ghosh’s “shadow partner” by sources within Swasthya Bhawan, was spotted outside the seminar room, prompting questions about his presence. Debasish Som, a close associate of Ghosh and not an employee of RG Kar Hospital, was also seen at the scene and was questioned by authorities at the Nizam Palace on Monday.
A third individual, Prasun Chatterjee, another associate of Ghosh and employed as a data entry operator at National Medical College, was also present in the seminar room shortly after the incident. The presence of these three men has led to mounting speculation about a potential cover-up or an attempt to tamper with evidence.
When questioned, Advocate Shantanu Dey claimed that he had visited the hospital for an orthopaedic consultation but was unable to produce a prescription to support this claim. Notably, Sandeep Ghosh, who has been implicated in various allegations, is an orthopaedic surgeon.
Dr Subarna Goswami, a member of the medical community, voiced concerns about a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence, including the hasty cremation of the body. She called for a thorough investigation into who was present in the seminar room on the day of the incident and why they were there. Goswami further accused Sandeep Ghosh of running a syndicate and questioned why key figures were not yet under investigation.
Adding to the controversy, influential doctors, allegedly affiliated with the ruling party, were reportedly seen at the hospital early in the morning, holding meetings in the seminar room where the body was found. These doctors were not on duty, raising further suspicion about their involvement. Dr Utpal Banerjee criticised the handling of the situation, suggesting that there was pressure on hospital staff and engineers to act without proper orders, leading to the vandalism of the crime scene.
Advocate Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya expressed doubts about the official narrative, hinting at a deeper conspiracy. “It’s hard to believe that a citizen volunteer could commit such a crime without anyone noticing,” he remarked. However, TMC leader Jayaprakash Majumdar downplayed the unusual activity at the hospital, suggesting that people naturally gather out of curiosity in such situations.
The unfolding scandal has cast a shadow over the investigation, with many calling for a more transparent and thorough probe to ensure justice is served.
