New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard the case involving Vibhav Kumar, the former private secretary to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is accused of assaulting Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP and former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson, Swati Maliwal. The court granted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) additional time to file its reply on Kumar’s bail plea.
Vibhav Kumar, arrested in connection with the alleged assault on Maliwal, had petitioned the Supreme Court for bail. The court has now set August 21 as the deadline for the ED to submit its response. Following this, Kumar’s lawyer will have until August 24 to file a counter-reply, with the Supreme Court scheduled to hear the matter again on August 27.
This development comes after the Supreme Court previously rejected Kumar’s bail plea on August 2. During that hearing, the court expressed concerns that Kumar, given his influential position, could potentially tamper with evidence or influence witnesses if released on bail.
The case dates back to May 13, when Kumar allegedly assaulted Maliwal. He was subsequently arrested on May 18, and an FIR was lodged on May 25 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. After the Delhi High Court denied his bail, Kumar challenged the decision in the Supreme Court.
Despite the initial rejection of his bail plea, Kumar sought further relief from the Supreme Court, leading to the current extension granted for the ED to file its reply. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the allegations and the need for a thorough examination of the evidence and circumstances surrounding the case.
As the legal proceedings continue, the next hearing on August 27 will be crucial in determining the course of action regarding Vibhav Kumar’s bail plea and the ongoing investigation into the assault on Swati Maliwal.
