Sanjay Roy Found Guilty: R.G. Kar Verdict Sparks Political Firestorm

Kolkata: In a landmark verdict, a Kolkata court has convicted Sanjay Roy of the rape and murder of a female doctor on duty at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The sentencing was to be announced on Monday, 20 January 2025, the court said.

Roy maintained his innocence during the trial, telling the judge he had been falsely implicated. I did not do this. They are letting go those who did it. An IPS officer is involved.”I always wear a chain of rudraksh on my neck, he added. But if I were the guilty one, my chain would have been broken there. I cannot commit this crime.”

The court said the accused has been charged under Sections 64, 66, and 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the complaint, Roy walked into the hospital’s seminar room and attacked the female doctor resting there, killing her.

The verdict has drawn reactions on the political spectrum. This is something the investigation is based on available evidence,” added Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar.

The evidence available was enough to find Sanjay Roy guilty. This case was investigated by Kolkata Police for 5 days… Valid questions were raised by the victim’s family…. I think the victim might have known something that could have created trouble for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had it been known. In front of Shastri Bhavan on the 20th, we will stage a protest against this case and the saline issue,” he added.

Rather CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat said, The whole world knows Sanjay Roy is guilty. Then who are the powers behind him? It is culpable government, a culpable principal, and a culpable entire administrative system that allowed such an incident to occur.”

Bengal Police has done well; they are capable: TMC leader Kunal Ghosh in the R.G. Kar case; they arrested Sanjay Roy within 24 hours. This shows that Kolkata Police were right. When they now say they are not satisfied with their probe, there were those who demanded a CBI investigation.”

The sentencing looms over the city, and this case continues to draw attention to questions of women’s safety and the intricacies of the justice system at work in alleged high-profile criminal cases.
