Moscow: As the brutal war in Ukraine drags on, fears of a direct and catastrophic confrontation between Russia and NATO are reaching a boiling point. With diplomatic relations at an all-time low and cross-border tensions escalating, military analysts are now raising the alarming possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin might resort to deploying the Aviation Thermobaric Bomb of Increased Power (ATBIP), menacingly known as the “Father of All Bombs” (FOAB), against European targets.
The FOAB is widely regarded as the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the world. Designed to vaporise everything within its blast radius using high-temperature explosions and shockwaves, it is Russia’s deadly equivalent to the United States’ “Mother of All Bombs” (MOAB). Given the sheer devastation it can cause, the mere speculation of its use has sent shockwaves across European capitals.
Tensions have surged following increasing European and American support for Ukraine, which Moscow views as a direct existential threat. Western intelligence reports suggest that Russia might transition from a conventional war in Ukraine to launching “hybrid” attacks on NATO territory. Nations including France, Poland, and the United Kingdom have already issued stern warnings to their citizens, urging them to prepare for emergency situations amid fears of cyberattacks, drone strikes, or sabotage on critical infrastructure.
Addressing the escalating rhetoric, European leaders have voiced deep concerns over Russia’s long-term military ambitions. French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently highlighted the urgent need to bolster Europe’s defence mechanisms to counter the looming Russian threat. Simultaneously, Switzerland has approved a new security strategy for 2026, further highlighting the precarious security dynamics of the region.
However, the Kremlin has firmly pushed back against these assertions. Russian officials maintain that Moscow has no intention of launching an unprovoked attack on NATO members, accusing European leaders of using the “Russian threat” narrative merely to justify massive hikes in their defence budgets. Nevertheless, Putin has consistently warned that any direct NATO intervention in the conflict would cross a red line, triggering an unprecedented military response.
As the world edges dangerously close to what many fear could spiral into World War III, the international community remains on high alert. The potential deployment of the FOAB, while still speculative, underscores the terrifying realities of an unchecked conflict between global superpowers.
