New York: In an unexpected development just days before a highly anticipated event, the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) has suspended the official account of the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) forum. The organisation is the primary host of an upcoming event in New York where Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to be the key speaker.
The event, which has generated significant buzz among the Indian diaspora and the Hindu community, is slated to take place at the iconic Madison Square Garden on August 29, 2026. However, the abrupt suspension of AHEAD’s X handle has triggered widespread discussions, raising questions about the platform’s moderation policies. As of now, X has not issued any official clarification regarding the specific reasons for the suspension.
The suspension occurs against a backdrop of diplomatic and political friction surrounding the RSS Chief’s visit to the United States. Recently, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) raised concerns over Bhagwat’s American tour. The federal commission controversially appealed to the US government to consider targeted sanctions against individuals linked to the RSS and even suggested revoking Bhagwat’s visa.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has strongly rebuffed the USCIRF’s remarks, dismissing them as “biased” and suffering from a severe “lack of credibility.”
Mohan Bhagwat, who has served as the sixth Sarsanghchalak of the RSS since 2009, plays a pivotal role in guiding the organisation’s ideological framework and social initiatives. His scheduled address at Madison Square Garden is viewed as a major outreach effort by the RSS to connect with the Indian diaspora in North America.
With the August 29 event fast approaching, all eyes are now on whether the programme will proceed as planned amidst the growing geopolitical scrutiny and whether X will restore the organiser’s account or issue an official statement justifying the digital ban.
