Mumbai: Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has finally spoken out about the team’s heartbreaking loss to Australia in the World Cup 2023 final, nearly 23 days after the event. In his first interview since the tournament, Sharma expressed his ongoing struggle to come to terms with the defeat.
With a visibly subdued demeanour, Sharma shared his initial feelings of despair and helplessness. He credited his family and friends for providing support during this difficult period, but acknowledged the initial difficulty in moving forward.
“Even when you do your best, you make mistakes. I’m very proud of the team,” Sharma stated, reflecting on the team’s performance. He emphasised their commitment and effort, highlighting their perfect record on the group stage.
The captain further revealed his coping mechanism, seeking solace in a distant location to escape the constant reminders of the loss. He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of fans throughout the tournament, despite the disappointing outcome.
“When I met people, they understood us. There was no anger, only pure love,” Sharma said, highlighting the positive interactions with fans that helped him regain his strength and move forward.
Sharma’s return to competitive cricket is imminent, with him set to play for India A in South Africa before resuming his captaincy duties in the upcoming Test series. However, questions remain regarding his participation in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
While reports suggest the board desires his leadership in the World Cup, no official decision has been made. The upcoming months will likely determine Sharma’s future with the national team in the shorter formats.
