Mumbai: Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma has made his name in the record books as the first captain in history to take his side to the final of all four big ICC tournaments. India reached the World Test Championship final in June 2023 under his captaincy and then the ODI World Cup final in November of the same year. In June 2024, Rohit led the team to win the T20 World Cup, and India has now reached the Champions Trophy final under his leadership.
Earlier, MS Dhoni took India to the finals of the T20 World Cup in 2007 and 2014 and the ODI World Cup final in 2011. India was also commanded by Dhoni in the Champions Trophy final of 2013, which the team won. But he never got the chance to take India to a World Test Championship final.
New Zealand’s Kane Williamson has also had outstanding success as a captain, leading his team to the 2019 ODI World Cup final, the World Test Championship final in June 2021, and the T20 World Cup final in the same year. Nevertheless, New Zealand has never advanced to a Champions Trophy final under his captaincy.
Having piloted India to T20 World Cup success in June 2024, Rohit Sharma became part of the exclusive club of Indian captains to have won an ICC trophy, a feat achieved earlier only by Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. With the final of the Champions Trophy slated for March 9, Rohit is looking to achieve another milestone. India will cross swords with New Zealand or South Africa to secure yet another ICC trophy.
Rohit was formally made India’s full-time white-ball captain in November 2021, and ever since then, he has been consistently breaking new records in leadership as well as consistency on the global circuit.
