New Delhi: In a significant move to recalibrate its political strategy, the opposition INDIA bloc convened a crucial meeting at the Constitution Club of India on Monday. The top leadership of the alliance resolved to put up a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and formulate a comprehensive roadmap over the next two months to prepare for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The high profile gathering witnessed the participation of leaders from 23 political parties. Prominent attendees included Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, and Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav. Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray joined the deliberations virtually to express his solidarity.
However, the meeting was marked by the conspicuous absence of two major allies. Both the Aam Aadmi Party and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam decided to skip the event. Their absence highlighted the growing fault lines within the coalition following recent political developments and regional electoral realignments.
During his opening address, Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on the central government. He pointed out the intensely negative economic environment and stressed that new investments are not generating the necessary jobs for the youth. Furthermore, Kharge strongly criticized the complete mismanagement of the national examination system, which he stated has crushed the aspirations of lakhs of students across the country.
The meeting, which was reportedly convened at the specific request of the Trinamool Congress, focused extensively on ironing out internal differences and evaluating the performance of the alliance in recent state elections. Leaders unanimously agreed that protecting democratic values and countering the alleged misuse of federal investigative agencies remain their absolute top priorities.
Briefing the media, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav stated that the alliance will take all future decisions collectively to safeguard the constitutional framework of the country. Reaffirming the long term vision of the alliance, Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut emphasized that the INDIA bloc is fully committed to staying united and bringing a meaningful political change in 2029.
Despite facing structural challenges and the recent exit of some regional partners, the remaining constituents of the INDIA bloc have clearly signaled their intent to keep the anti BJP front alive and active ahead of the upcoming electoral battles.
