New Delhi: In a significant precautionary move amid escalating security concerns in neighbouring Bangladesh, India has advised the dependents of its diplomatic mission and post officials in the country to return home.

The decision comes just weeks before Bangladesh’s crucial parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12.

Official sources confirmed that the advisory targets family members of personnel at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and other assistant high commissions. “In light of the security situation, India has advised dependents of Mission & Post officials in Bangladesh to return home as a precautionary step,” sources told news agencies. Importantly, the Indian missions and posts will continue to remain fully operational, with no impact on diplomatic functions or staffing levels.

The step reflects growing unease over Bangladesh’s volatile political climate following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Recent incidents, including the killing of a student leader that triggered nationwide protests, have heightened tensions. Anti-India sentiments have surfaced in some quarters, with protests near the Indian Embassy and baseless accusations against New Delhi. Reports also highlight a surge in violence against minorities, recording over 645 incidents in 2025 alone.

This advisory underscores India’s priority to safeguard its personnel and families while maintaining engagement with Dhaka. Bilateral ties have faced strains, including earlier summonses by envoys over law-and-order issues.

As elections approach, the move signals heightened vigilance in a region critical to India’s neighbourhood policies.
