New Delhi: Reliance has had talks with OpenAI and Meta for furthering the AI landscape in India. During these talks, it had finalised an agreement with the largest telecom company in India, Reliance Jio, for a partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, according to reports. More details about these talks have emerged.
According to recent news reports and conversations with its employees, OpenAI has considered reducing the subscription plans for ChatGPT. That said, whether or not that was part of the conversation with Reliance is unclear. But then there were also calls from the other big player in Indian telecom, Reliance Jio, that the company might offer OpenAI’s models to its enterprise customers through APIs. Reliance further proposed to host and operate OpenAI’s models in the country so as to have local users’ data within its borders and out of the reach of foreign jurisdictions.
Besides OpenAI, Reliance even held talks with Meta for hosting its AI models from a data centre that will come up in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance is also going to set up the largest AI data centre in Jamnagar with a total capacity of 3 gigawatts, which will be an unprecedented record. The majority of operational data centres today are in the US, and a significant portion of them have subgigawatt capacities. Reliance has partnered with NVIDIA for this project, and NVIDIA will be providing the AI semiconductors for the centre.
Running a data centre is energy intensive, and experts have raised concerns about sustainability issues. Reliance will address these concerns by sourcing the majority of the center’s energy requirements from green energy sources. And to power the data centre in an environmentally responsible way, the company is examining potential solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects in the region.
