Record Revenue For Delhi’s Excise Department: How Much Was Sold?

New Delhi: The New Year bash saw Delhiites splurge heavily on liquor, with 2.3 million bottles being sold in the capital on December 31. This has led to increased sales and, consequently, tremendous revenue to the government, running into crores of rupees. But this has reduced by one hundred thousand bottles compared to the previous year’s figures.

The decision to reduce the quantity of liquor sold this year, states the Delhi Excise Department, is due to the end-of-the-year ‘Holiday Spirit’; December 31 fell on a Tuesday. In any particular month, the sales of liquor are always lower during the weekdays than the weekends. Although the number of outlets decreased, the officials pointed out that it has boosted the sales of liquor in the current year as compared to the previous year by 13 percent.

While last December there were approximately 2.03 million bottles sold on New Year’s Eve alone, this year, while the actual consumption of speculative products was very high, it was not exceeding the rate of the previous year.

The Excise Department pointed out that these current constant changes in the problematic excise policy have helped to bring stabilisation to excise revenue, which is now back on the right track.

Representatives said that a significant number of people refuse the purchase of alcoholic beverages on Tuesday, which was an affecting point. Nevertheless, they still believe that the SCs gross for this New Year’s Eve is reasonable, bearing in mind certain factors.

Some of the particular causes include; more shop licenced to sell liquor all around the city area, increased liquor brand availability and improved consumer touches throughout the recent months.

Delhi is still uncertain about changing its excise policies and the changing trend of consumer preferences, but the officials are still likely to look forward to higher excise revenues from liquor sales.
