Jaipur: In a unique development, two Muslim MLAs in Rajasthan, Zubair Khan and Yunus Khan, took oaths in Sanskrit during the first session of the recently elected 16th Assembly. They are the first Muslim MLAs in the state to take an oath in this language.
Apart from Zubair Khan and Yunus Khan, several other MLAs also took oaths in Sanskrit, including BJP MLA Gopal Sharma from Jaipur Civil Lines and Congress MLAs Udaylal Bhadana, Kailash Chandra Meena, Jogeshwar Garg, Chhagan Singh Rajpurohit, Noxham Chaudhary, Jethanand Vyas, and Zoraram Kumawat.
An independent MLA from Barmer Ravindra Singh Bhati attempted to take the oath in Hindi and Rajasthani, but the video of him taking the oath in Rajasthani was later deleted as Protem Speaker Kalicharan Saraf, who was presiding over the oath-taking ceremony, stopped the MLAs from doing so.
Zubair Khan, who defeated the BJP’s Sukhwant Singh by a margin of 19696 votes, surprised many by taking an oath in Sanskrit. Yunus Khan, on the other hand, is a close aide of former chief minister Vasundhara Raje. He left the BJP after being denied a ticket in the recent assembly elections and contested as an independent, defeating Congress candidate Chetan Singh Chaudhary by over 2,000 votes.
Notably, Yunus Khan also visited Karni Mata’s Darshan Deshnok immediately after winning the election, which has been praised by many people.
The use of Sanskrit for the oath-taking ceremony has sparked discussions among political circles and the general public. Some have lauded the MLAs for their choice of language, while others have questioned the necessity of using Sanskrit, which is not a widely spoken language in Rajasthan.
